The Latin word Limen (lai·muhn) means threshold, the in-between.
Between what was and what’s next.
A place of transition, of waiting, of not knowing, and often not being in control of what comes next. It’s the space between things, times, and places:
Having left one room, not yet entered another.
Between relationships.
Between jobs.
Between seasons of life.
In these quiet moments, the mind softens and empties, open to what may come. Some cultures offer rituals of withdrawal to meet this space with intention. Even small acts like putting away our phones or taking a break from social media can become gentle invitations into liminality in our modern lives.
Having a daily knitting practice offers me the same comfort: a soft pause, a time outside the noise. It’s a practice of slowing down after the demands of the day, a return to myself, stitch by stitch.
Limen Shawl was first published in Radicle Threads Vol. 4. It features an all-over lace pattern that alternates between a mesh grid and a leaf motif. I designed this shawl to capture the state of liminality with the mesh suggesting empty openness and the leaves symbolizing hope and genuine newness.

CONSTRUCTION
Limen shawl is a DK weight shawl worked from the top-down, beginning with a garter tab, with its body worked in a mesh and leaf lace pattern. Increases are placed on every row of the pattern to attain a shallow crescent shape with longer tips that wrap around the shoulders well. The lace is framed by a simple 2 stitch garter border throughout. A picot bind-off finishes off the shawl nicely, enhancing the overall look of the lace.
PATTERN NOTES
♡︎ The pattern incorporates 2-stitch garter edging.
♡︎ Written as well as charted instructions are provided for the lace.
♡︎ You can work additional full or partial repeats of Chart A to use up your yarn. The lace pattern can be stopped on almost any row without disrupting the overall look of the shawl.
♡︎A row tracker is included at the end of the pattern.
