My mother-in-law, Stacy, is an incredible artist, from multi-material sculptures to hand-dyed yarn to ceramics. When she gifted me some custom ceramic buttons she made for my knitting, I knew I had to make something special to show them off. This pattern is named after some of the buttons she made, two tiny birds that fit well with the size of this small collar (and in a reference to a romance book I was reading when designing the pattern. IYKYK). As the season gets colder, this small piece fits perfectly above my sweater for a little extra warmth on a cool day.
This pattern uses a simple 2x2 rib for a comfortable fit. Button loops are made from a simple I-Cord to secure the collar around the neck. Break out your favorite buttons to show them off with this quick project, perfect for the cooler months. This project is very yarn economical, using less than 40m of Aran weight yarn, and is perfect to use up those beautiful scraps you have, or to try out a new yarn without committing to a large project.
The pattern is written to fit a neck measuring 13.5in or 35.5cm, but adjustments are listed to make it wider or shorter. The collar is 3in tall as written, but can be made taller or shorter to fit longer or shorter necks. The pattern gauge is approximately 4.5 stitches per inch and 7 rows per inch with 5.5mm needles in 2x2 rib.
This is my first pattern, and as such is completely free! Please tag #LittleBirdCollar on Instagram with your finished project, I’d love to see it.
