PATTERN DETAILS:
This is a knitting pattern for a stranded fair isle pullover sweater and matching hat to fit a 14 to 14.5 inch doll similar to WellieWishers® Ruby Red and Hearts for Hearts™ dolls. The sweater has a buttoned placket opening that can be worn at the front or the back. The body, sleeves and hat are knitted bottom up, in the round using stranded fair isle technique. Body and sleeves are knit separately to underarm then joined for the yoke. A placket opening is created at the back, beginning at the start of the yoke. The cuffs, hat band and hem of the sweater are knit in 2-color corrugated rib. The hat is closed at the top using either the 3-needle bind off or your preferred method of seaming. The pattern PDF is 23 pages and includes photos, written instructions and charts for the fair isle design.

SKILL: Intermediate. This pattern includes basic knitting techniques as well as the following additional techniques:

  • Fair isle/stranded knitting in the round on circular needles or double pointed needles. I used the magic loop technique.
  • Contrasting edge long tail cast on.
  • Following a color and knitting symbols chart.
  • Three needle bind off for hat optional.
  • Making buttonholes with yarn over and knit 2 together.
  • Grafting underarm seams using Kitchener stitch or preferred method of joining live stitches.

GAUGE/TENSION:
36 stitches x 48 rows = 4” 10 cm square in stockinette stitch and fair isle

MATERIALS:
- Needles: #1 US 2.25 mm needles or the size that gives you correct gauge/tension for the yarn you are using, either double point or circular for magic loop. If you are using magic loop, you will need at least a 40”/100 cm cable but longer is preferred. Note: Because my gauge is tighter with fair isle than with plain stocking stitch, I used #1 US 2.25mm for fair isle design and #0 US 2 mm for plain one-color stocking stitch

  • Yarn: Fingering/Super Fine #1 weight approximately 150 yards/30 g in total. Yarn amount is approximate and will vary depending on yarn used.

  • Additional materials: yarn needle for grafting underarms and weaving ends, stitch holders or scrap yarn, 12 stitch markers optional, 2 buttons for placket.

  • Yarn options used for testing: I used the following yarns for the hats and sweaters in the photo: Loops and Threads Woolike, Cascade Yarn 220 Fingering and Patons Kroy Socks. Additional yarns used by my testers: Hobby Lobby Yarn Bee Color Idyll.
