The first piece of the By a Lady collection, the Lizzy Scarf, captures the timeless charm of Regency-era romance in a quick, beginner-friendly design. This scarf features an elegant cell-lace center that is surprisingly easy to master, making it a fast and satisfying project for any skill level. Framed by crisp garter stitch tips and borders—with instructions for sizes S, M, and L, plus the flexibility to adjust it to any custom length or width—it’s the perfect way to begin the collection with a piece of literary-inspired luxury that is as fun to knit as it is to wear.

The Lizzy Scarf is the first piece in the By a Lady collection, designed to be a relaxing, quick knit. While the pattern is written for DK weight yarn on 4.5 mm needles, it’s completely adaptable—you can use anything from fingering to chunky yarn to highlight your favorite fiber. Solid or light tonal colors really show off the cell lace detail, while darker or variegated yarns give it a softer, subtler look. The gauge is not crucial in this piece, but for reference, here is mine: 16 sts and 24 rows = 4” (10 cm) in Main Body Lace Pattern, measured over blocked center stitches (excluding selvedge).

The scarf starts with a simple garter stitch tip before moving into the main pattern. From there, it’s a soothing mix of garter borders and cell lace that adds just the right amount of charm without being fussy. When you’ve reached the length you want, a matching garter section shapes the other end for a clean, balanced finish.

Offered in sizes S, M, and L, this scarf is incredibly flexible and beginner-friendly. Because the stitch repeat is so simple, you can easily adjust both the width and length to create anything from a slim neckerchief to a giant wrap. It’s a quick project, and there are step-by-step video tutorials to help you along the way.

My sample is size S and is about 4.5” wide at the widest part (main body) and about 46.25” long after blocking. I overblocked my sample a bit, so for most, the width for size S would be closer to about 4’.

Please note that there is no exact yardage required for this pattern. The reason is that, obviously, everyone likes a different scarf length, and I cannot accommodate all of that in the yardage. The same goes for the measurements; I have only included the length of my sample in the pattern. Please check out my test knitters’ lovely project pages, where they show off the versatility of this pattern in all sorts of yarns and sizes! All sizes have been tested.

This pattern is 7 pages long, but there are only 3 pages of actual knitting instructions. Look at the pattern photos to find a sample page of the pattern!
