I’ve noticed that lots of people don’t like sewing up, but seams are an essential structural element for well-fitting garments. To this end, I set about designing a jacket which would require minimal finishing whilst still providing a garment with integrity. And Lobster Pot is the result!
I enjoyed every minute of making this jacket and can’t wait to start wearing it - I know it will be an all-year-round feature in my wardrobe, ranging from cardigan to jacket as the months flip by.
The lower body is knitted sideways in one piece starting at the buttonhole border in a fun textured pattern, then stitches are picked up along the straight edge to create a flattering waistband which flows beautifully in to the upper body pattern. This in itself is a scaled-down version of the lower body pattern and the pattern instructions give advice on the ratio of stitches to pick up. Buttonhole and button bands are worked at the same time as the body and ends are designed to join in at a point in the pattern where they can be knitted-in so that the finished edge is perfect. Shoulders are cast off together in a three needle bind-off and the only sewing up is on the sleeves, which are worked in plain stocking stitch to provide a back-drop to the stunning body details.
I hope you enjoy knitting this beauty as much as I have enjoyed designing and writing it!
