This classically styled, garter stitch jacket is knit in bulky wool with a worsted wool contrasting border and fold-back long collar. The design was first published by Elizabeth Zimmerman in her 1973, issue #9 of Wool Gathering, has been re-released by Schoolhouse Press as Spun Out Designs issue #32 now available on their website. EZ liked the design so much that, according to her comments in the newsletter, she wore it for the photographs on the inside dust jacket of Knitting Without Tears.

Pattern sizes included are 36”, 40” and 44” as measured around the widest part of the body. A discussion is included on using EZ’s percentage system to adapt the pattern to other sizes based on the recommended gauge.

Recommended yarn is no longer available. EZ suggests any wool that knits a firm garter stitch at 4 stitches per inch and a worsted wool to a gauge of 5 stitches per inch is suitable.

Yardage for the 44” size is given as approximately 1200 of the main color and 1 skein of worsted for the contrasting border.

Needle sizes suggested are approximate and should be selected based on achieving recommended gauge.

Design features include afterthought pockets, garter stitch phony seams, collar short row shaping and I-Cord tab buttonholes. The collar is knit as part of the front panel and requires a center back join using garter stitch weave. The sleeves are picked up and knit flat from the shoulder to cuff then seamed.
