My husband asked me to knit a scarf for him in this wonderfully soft cashmere yarn, which is named for my alma mater, Mount Holyoke College!!

As I studied this lovely, golden-hued tweed cashmere, it called to mind the sun-dappled surface of Lower Lake, with golden autumn leaves reflected in the surface of the water. It is a scene I remember well from 2 years of living in North Mandelle Hall, walking across or around Lower Lake several times each day.

I seized upon the idea of a large, loose cable pattern, to evoke gentle ripples across the surface of Lower Lake, and then I decided to make it a reversible cable pattern--unless you are a statistician trying to calculate the odds of falling into the lake after a night of house parties, there is no “right” or “wrong” side of Lower Lake!!
