During the Age of Discovery, Portugal established trading posts and colonies as far afield as China. The city of Macau — now famous for its casinos — was under Portuguese rule until 1999, when it was handed over to the People’s Republic alongside Hong Kong.
Macau’s Portuguese heritage remains clearly visible in its architecture and is protected as a UNESCO World Heritage site—featuring, for instance, the Calçada Portuguesa in the old town’s main square, Largo do Senado. The wavy pattern of these mosaic walkways is reminiscent of the classic, widely used Mar Largo design, though it is narrower in scale. With this cushion, I want to welcome this pattern from Macau into my knitting family of Calçada Portuguesa designs—adding a touch of the exotic, so to speak.

Das portugiesische Erbe Macaus ist in der Architektur noch deutlich sichtbar und als UNESCO-Welterbe geschützt – dazu gehört auch die Calçada Portuguesa auf dem zentralen Platz der Altstadt, dem Largo do Senado. Das Wellenmuster dieser Mosaikpflasterungen erinnert an das klassische, weit verbreitete Mar Largo-Design, ist jedoch schmaler angelegt. Mit diesem Kissen möchte ich dieses Muster aus Macau in meine Strickkollektion rund um die Calçada-Portuguesa aufnehmen – und so sozusagen einen Hauch von Exotik einbringen.
