MAFIC is a flat-knit garter-stitch hat! Knit Mafic entirely flat (straight needles could be used, but the flexibility of a circular needle helps), without true seams, all in one piece. Mafic is reversible. The wrongside looks really cool.

Boxy construction smoothes out when worn, due to the flexibility of garter stitch. Raised faux-seams on the reverse side make this an interesting hat to wear inside-out or as intended. And the unusual structure makes this project an excellent, functional showcase for scrap yarns and leftovers from other worsted- or heavy-DK-weight projects.

Since this hat knits up in less than one average hand-dyed worsted skein (~200 yds) and shows off its yarn with simple stitches, it’s a good project in anything from plain wool to scraps to pristine luxury hand-dyed skeins. With just one needle required, the materials list is pleasingly minimalist.

Gauge:
Gauge is 9 sts and 18 rows over 2”/5cm in blocked garter stitch. Be sure to check your gauge.

Materials:

  • 1 skein of Malabrigo Rios or Washtd, any color, or about 100-140 yds of similar yarn.
  • 1 16”+ circular needle in US7/4.5mm, or size needed for gauge
  • Tapestry needle

Note: the foam wig form I use to show hats is about 20”/51cm around. It generally fits the smaller hats better, so the kid-sized hat is the main one shown on this form.

There is an error in the earlier versions! The provisional crochet cast-on should be a cable cast-on. This information is also in the errata link.
