Makkovik is pattern #3 in Landed, Volume 2: Labrador. Maggok, the Inuit word meaning two and Vik, the Inuit word meaning place. Makkovik is a place full of unique culture and terrain, and a land bordered by two main inlets.

Makkovik is a drop shoulder vest, worked bottom up and in the round with steeks at the armholes. Once the steeks are cut, the shoulders are shaped with short rows and closed with a 3-needle BO.

Important: Makkovik is pattern #3 of the “Landed, Volume 2: Labrador” e-book. As each of the 17 patterns in the e-book are published between now and through 2027, they will get added to the e-book. So if you buy the e-book now, you will get an update notification in your Ravelry library each time another pattern is added to it.

Sizes

(1,2,3)(4,5)(6,7,8) with finished garment circumferences:

(92,102.5,113)(123.5,134)(144.5,155.5,166)cm /
(36.25,40.25,44.5)(48.75,52.75)(57,61.25,65.25)“

Makkovik is intended to be worn with about 7.5 to 15cm / 3 to 6” of positive ease at hips, so I recommend that you choose a size which is 7.5 to 15cm / 3 to 6” larger than your hip circumference. Sample shown is size 3, worn with about 17cm / 7” ease at hips on a 173cm / 68” tall woman.

Yarn

Garthenor Organic Cairngorm (100% organic Romney wool; 350 meters / 383 yards per 50 grams). Sample uses the main color (MC) Blazer and contrast color (CC) Steel. If using the same sample yarn, the number of skeins is given in brackets below. If using a different yet similar yarn, you will need approximately:

MC Blazer (2,2,3)(3,3)(3,4,4) skeins or:
(625,700,795)(880,975)(1050,1170,1260) meters /
(685,765,870)(965,1065)(1150,1280,1380) yards

CC Steel (2,2,2)(2,2)(2,3,3) skeins, or:
(385,445,510)(570,640)(700,775,850) meters /
(420,485,560)(625,700)(765,850,930) yards

Note: this yarn is currently unavailable and it is uncertain when it will be in stock again.

Good similar alternatives are:

  • Garthenor Organic Number 1 (these are just like Cairngorm except they are undyed)
  • Morehouse Merino lace
  • Isager Spinni
  • Ístex Einband

Gauge

To find your needle size, you need to swatch the Stranded Colorwork. If you don’t know whether your stitch gauge changes between single-color stockinette and stranded colorwork, then you should swatch for both.

Stranded colorwork: 34 sts / 34 rnds to 10cm / 4” using size C needles
Single-color stockinette: 34 sts / 44 rows to 10cm / 4” using size A needles.

Needles & Notions

The gauges were achieved with the following needle size. To work the pattern as written, you must swatch and use a needle size that will result in the correct gauge after blocking.

Size A: 2mm (US 0) preferred needles for working small circumferences (armhole edging) and circular needles for working the single-color upper body.
Size B: 2.25mm (US 1) circular needles for working the hem ribbing.
Size C: 2.75mm (US 2) circular needles for working the stranded colorwork.

You will also need: either a crochet hook and yarn, darning needle and thin yarn/thread, or felting tool and board for reinforcing steeks; scissors for cutting steeks; spare interchangeable cables, spare needles or scrap yarn for holding stitches; stitch markers and removable markers.

Techniques

  • stranded colorwork in the round
  • steeking
  • decreasing stitches (k2tog, ssk, p2tog, ssp)
  • short rows
  • 3-needle BO
  • I-cord BO
