‘Manthanein” means “to learn” in Greek. The word implies understanding, comprehending, or acquiring a habit through learned experience. In this case, the learning was inspired by the European Shoulder seam, sometimes called the “full-fashioned” shoulder. I wanted to see why it is showing up more and more as a top-down method, and now I know! It created a great fit on the shoulder, putting the ‘seam’ at where the garment will bear the weight on your body. A touch of cables add a classic look, with a bit of a twist on the back.

Manthanein is worked top-down. The fronts and back are worked separately to the underarm, then joined in the round to the hem. The back yoke is worked first. The back neck width is cast on, then increases occur until the cross back width is reached. The left and right front are picked up from the back yoke shoulder edge, creating a diagonal seam on the back shoulder.

The sleeves are picked up from the armhole edge, and the shoulder cap shaped with short rows. The sleeve is then knit top-down and in the round to the cuff.

Recommended Ease at Upper Chest
2 - 4” (5 - 10 cm)
The garment is shown in Size 3 with 3” (7.5 cm) ease at the upper chest.

Ease on this garment is based on upper chest (high bust) measurements rather than full chest/ bust. Using your upper chest measurement to determine what size to make will help to give you a better fit. This means taking your upper chest measurement plus the suggested ease range and checking against the finished chest/full bust measurement of the sweater.

For an improved fit, the front of the body for Sizes 7 - 11 is larger than the back.
