Tiny inked dragons battling at the bottom of a medieval manuscript. A scholar’s passionate “Absurd!” scrawled beside a controversial passage. A personal note: “Reminds me of home” pencilled softly on a dog-eared page of a beloved novel. Marginalia turns passive reading into animated conversation across years (or even centuries.) Sometimes thoughtful, sometimes playful, these intimate annotations connect the writer and the reader. Finding old notes in forgotten books can feel like having a conversation with someone from the past…or with a past version of ourselves.
The Marginalia Socks celebrate these intriguing textual asides with delightfully tactile stitches. Knit from the top down, they begin with a 1x1 twisted rib cuff. The sock’s leg features an all-around playful twisted stitch pattern (reminiscent of scribbles and doodles) which continues down and across the top of the foot. The alternating stitches create a visual rhythm that’s both orderly and spontaneous, with a satisfying texture. The socks are finished off with an eye of partridge heel and round toe, and the pattern includes three sizes.
