Marian is a longer, warmer variant of the medieval hood designs in the Hoods for the Woods collection. While mysterious and elegant, it’s also warm and comfortable, perfect for wintry walks in the forest.
I chose the legend of Robin Hood for this series because I love its theme of fairness, but also because Marian is seen to be an equal in this story, a rarity in an era when women had so little autonomy. She is no damsel in distress, but a courageous, intelligent, independent woman, skilled with bow & sword, and an active participant in the endeavour. (And also because they run off to live in the woods - a lifelong dream of mine!)

The pattern is mostly written pattern, however the colourwork is only charted.

The size of both hood and cape are adaptable, and the cape shape & length are customisable within the recipe. The pattern includes 2 sizes of hood, and cape sizes ranging from shoulder &/or bust circ of 78-160cm (31-63”).
-
Notions: 3.5mm (US size 4) DPNs to begin the hood, 3.5mm circulars of 80cm+ length, and 3.75mm circs for colourwork. Embroidery needle for grafting a few sts at the chin and seaming the hem.
-
Suits DK weight yarn in any yardage between approx 800m and 1200m (880-1300y).
-
My project page can be found here. The sample used 4 skeins in total - 3 of MC and 1 of CC, with a small adult hood and a medium cape size for a 1m shoulder circ.
