Maria is my color-loving daughter-in-law. I designed a sweater for her as a Christmas present in November 2025. Now it gets its own pattern.

Marias tricolore is a compound raglan sweater. It is worked back and forth until the sleeves are separated. Here, intarsia is worked, GSR are worked, and attention is required. Then the body is worked in the rnd in stockinette stitch, and a shape down the body must be chosen. The neck is next. It is worked with intarsia and sewn together at the neck and the back raglan seam. The sleeves, where the stripe pattern continues all the way down into the rib, are the last thing to be worked. One tip is to work a smaller section down the body, then work the neck rib. Have the back seam and neck sewn together — and then work the body. This makes it easier to try on along the way and assess the body shape and length.

The construction is probably a little different, as over time I have found that working GSR in different sections gives a really good fit. And it requires some explanations. It requires attention, and it requires working line by line. But it is worth it. A well-fitting sweater has come into being. Almost tailor-knitted. Therefore, it is recommended that you are an advanced beginner to experienced knitter and prepared to work line by line until the sleeves are separated. From here, it goes like a breeze.

Practical information

Sizes (1, 2) 3, 4 (5, 6, 7) 8, 9

The finished measurements of the sweater are approx.

Bust circumference approx. (85, 90) 94, 96.5 (102.5, 108, 116.5) 128, 135 cm

The armhole is approx. (18, 19) 19.5, 20 (20, 21, 22) 23, 24 cm (measured flat)

Sleeve circumference before decreases: (28, 28) 28, 29, (32, 33.5, 36.5) 37, 40 cm

Length under the sleeve is approx. 41–46 cm and is determined by how far in on the body the raglan line sits. So try on along the way.

Full length could be approx. (48, 50) 52, 54 (56, 58, 60) 62, 64 (the length is estimated; a longer or shorter length will change the number of skeins of MC needed)

Size selection: Marias tricolore sweater is intended to have between 2–3 cm of negative ease and 2.5 cm of positive ease in relation to the actual body measurement around the shoulders and upper bust. In addition, the sleeves are close-fitting. Down the body, waist decreases or increases for a slight A-line shape can be chosen, if it is not to go straight down. Your sweater. Your choice. If you are between 2 sizes, choose the smaller size if you want the fitted officer look.

Yarn Sandnes Kos – 150 m per 50 g:

MC: (4, 4) 4, 5 (5, 6, 6) 7, 7 skeins

CC1: (1, 1) 1, 1 (1, 1, 1) 1, 2 skeins

CC2: (1, 1) 1, 1 (1, 1, 1) 1, 2 skeins

Longer, wider or shorter and narrower will affect the final yarn consumption either up or down.
