Meerkat Hat
Meerkat Hat from the zoo episode of Always Sunny!
There are a lot of versions of this hat online, but I didn’t feel like any of them were as accurate as they could’ve been. The hats Charlie and Mac wear are a little bit…worse looking? I also saw a lot made with bulky yarn and the proportions just weren’t right, so here is what I hope is a more accurate rendition of The Meerkat Hat.
Materials and Supplies
• Worsted weight yarn in light brown, dark brown, and white
◦ I used Red Heart Super Saver (haters gonna hate, but I am almost positive this is the yarn used in the episode of the show) in Buff, Coffee, and Soft White
◦ YARDAGE - approximate!: less than 364 yards of everything (364 yards is a regular Red Heart Super Save skein)
• Size G crochet hook
• 2 black or dark brown buttons - 1”
• 1 safety eye (for the nose) – 0.75” or bigger
• Yarn needle
• Regular needle and threat/embroidery floss matching eyes
• Stitch marker for the continuous rounds
• Pins (optional, but recommended for positioning the parts before attaching – I use bobby pins)
• 3” pom pom maker (optional, but will make your life easier)
• Stuffing material for snout and eyes
Abbreviations/Skills Needed
• Ch: chain
• Sc: single crochet
• Hdc: half-double crochet
• Sl: slip stitch
• Inc: increase
• Dec: decrease
• St/sts: stitch/stitches
• Rnd/rnds: round/rounds
Whip stitch/running stitch can be used to join the pieces. You can use whichever you prefer that you think looks best for each part, but I have noted what I chose to do.
Gauge: approx. 3 sc/inch and 4 sc rows/inch
Finished hats, when lying flat measure about 8” tall excluding the hair and 11” across. It will stretch to about a 24” circumference.
