Kino Knits and The Knitting Boutique are excited to bring you their first MKAL, a single-skein shawl designed for The Knitting Boutique’s Severn Fingering yarn, a unique blend of Blue Faced Leicester (BFL) fiber and silk, or The Knitting Boutique’s Anacostia Fingering yarn, a bouncy merino. Choose a solid or semi-solid for best results.

The Merrain MKAL Shawl, originally released as 6 clues in June and July 2017, is now available as a single pattern download. (Original clue files are still available for download as part of the pattern purchase.)

What You’ll Need

  • 1 skein of fingering yarn: recommend The Knitting Boutique’s Severn Fingering (75% BFL wool/25% silk, 400 yards/366 m per 4 oz/113 g) or The Knitting Boutique’s Anacostia Fingering (100% merino, 400 yards/366 m per 4 oz/113 g) or similar yarn,
  • 20 yards/18 m of a smooth waste yarn in a contrasting color for a provisional cast-on
  • crochet needle if you choose to do a crochet provisional cast-on
  • US size 6/4.0 mm circular needles, 29-32”/75-80 cm in length (or your preferred length for knitting shawls)
  • 2 stitch markers
  • gram scale for weighing your yarn
  • tapestry needle for weaving in ends
  • blocking wires and pins

Skills

Don’t worry – we’ve got you covered. We’ve created helpful videos to demonstrate each of these skills.

Gauge

20 stitches and 30 rows in flat garter stitch over 4”/10 cm AFTER AGGRESSIVE WET BLOCKING.

This is the gauge that you get after you thoroughly soak your swatch, stretch your swatch as far as it will go, pin it until it dries, and then remove the pins to measure, which lets the swatch relax a little. However, this is still way more stretched out than it is before blocking.

That said, this is a shawl. Being a little off in your gauge will not be disastrous. Your goal is to get a fabric you like for a light shawl.
