Metallic Twist Shawl

This is a classic triangular shaped shawl, worked in DK weight yarn, and uses Make 1 Right and Make 1 Left at the spine and each end in order to increase and build the shape. The 4 colors worked are shown both in combinations and alone, in a rich canvas full of texture and interest, creating a generous cozy warm shawl.

When I first saw the beautiful yarns I used for this sample, I thought of the classic versatile earthy beauty of metals. A material so strong and bold as metal inspires in me the decorative beauty created by artisans through the ages of twisting thin wires of various precious metals and in turn equally bold strong patterning of twisted stitches comprising of a combination of Right Twists, Left Twists and knitting through the back loops.

Materials: Requires approx 775 metres / 848 yards of DK weight yarn.
I used Yak DK, a yarn by The Wool Barn for the sample, which is a merino, silk & Yak blend, but any DK weight yarn that offers good drape and stitch definition will be fine. The following yarn usage amounts are an approximate guide, and may differ slightly when using substitute yarns.
These are approx yardage amounts I used of each colour.
The Wool Barn, ‘YAK DK’ DK weight yarn (60% Wool - Superwash Merino, 20% Silk, 20% Yak)
Yarn A : Rosewood, (a reddish brown) (actual amount used 209 meters / 229 yards)
Yarn B : Denim, (and indigo) (actual amount used 209 metres / 229 yards)
Yarn C : Nomad, (Silver) (actual amount used 138 metres / 151 yards)
Yarn D : Pecan, (a golden) (actual amount used 199 metres / 218 yards)
Needles: 5mm / US 8, 47 Inch/120 cm circular needles.
