Moon cowl is a double-layered cowl in stranded colourwork pattern that is inspired by old Latvian pagan deities: the Moon, protector of people, and Laima, the goddess of destiny.

The inner section features the cross of the Moon, signifying the 4 phases of the Moon and also the cycle of life. The outer border sections carry the sign of Laima’s broom, it sweeps away all that’s bad and evil, and wearing this sign is said to bring good luck.

Size: one size, 22cm / 8¾” high, 63cm / 24¾” in circumference.

Yarn: Fingering weight, approximately in total: 115g / 410m / 450yds.
For the outer layer:

  • 40g / 140m / 155yds of the main colour;
  • 25g / 90m / 98yds of the contrasting colour. For lining: 50g / 180m / 196yds of any colour.

The sample is worked in The Border Mill Alpaca Rose 4ply (50g / 175m / 191yds), less than 1 skein of each colour, and an additional 60m of leftover yarn for the lining.

Gauge: 28 sts & 32 rows = 10cm / 4” in colourwork Stockinette st after blocked. Gauge is not crucial for this project, but the required yardage and size of the finished cowl might differ if worked to a different gauge.

Suggested needles: 2.75mm (US 2) or needle size to obtain gauge.

Notions: 1 stitch marker, tapestry needle.

Techniques used: stranded colourwork, mattress stitch.

Notes: The outer layer is worked in the round to full height, the lining is continued in the round and then bound-off. The cast-on and bind-off edges are seamed using mattress stitch.
