Very straightforward and highly effective! These moss stitch handwarmers are the perfect size to learn moss stitch, practice the stitch, then decide whether you’d like to use moss stitch for a larger project.

These work up very fast as two rectangles worked flat on straight needles, then seamed together, leaving a thumbhole. No DPNs or thumb gussets required.

WHAT’S MOSS STITCH? It’s a 1x1 rib, worked in two rows, then reversed (so on the wrong side, you knit the knits and purl the purls. Then on the right side, you purl the knits and knit the purls.) The right side forms a chunky, bumpy-textured fabric with bold horizontal bumps; the wrong side forms a more delicate bumpy fabric with little star shapes. In the photo, I’m holding the wrong side up, and wearing the right side.

These handwarmers use a moss stitch section of 18 stitches, worked between two stitch markers. There’s a p2 section on either side of the moss stitch, and a 1x1 rib for the rest of the warmer.
