Mt. Eddy Hat by Ramona French

Mt. Eddy Hat

This hat, with its ridges and valleys, makes me think of the Pacific Crest Trail along the shoulder of Mt. Eddy. Mt. Eddy is the tallest peak in the Klamath range, home to beautiful animals, wild-flowers, water and woods.

It’s a cool hat, but I can’t get a good photo. It has a wild texture before blocking. Some may prefer that. I tried both ways, it looks just as good after blocking, but less wild.

Use any size yarn or needles, as the size of the hat depends on the circumference of your head. Knit the band sideways until it fits your head comfortably. Graft or sew it into a round, and then pick up stitches for the body of the hat. It’s a very textural hat, fun to see it develop. It’s also easy to knit, and the decreases at the top create an interesting shape that reminds me of lava flows from the top of a volcano.

I used a sport-weight wool and alpaca blend. Once I knit the band and joined it in a circle I picked up 117 stitches, which works out to 9 13-stitch repeats. How many repeats you pick up depends on your needles and yarn, and the size of your head.

The pattern is fully written, and has a chart.
