My Basic Hat is a beginner’s friendly basic hat for juniors & adults. You are guided through all the steps of knitting this hat, with clear & detailed descriptions and links to 8 video tutorials!

My basic Hat fits a head circumference of approx. 48 - 52 cm (19 - 20½ inch) (junior) and approx. 54 - 60 cm (21¼ - 23½ inch) (adult). The hat is worked from the bottom up in a 1x1 ribbing pattern and can be worn in different ways, depending on how (many times) you fold the edge.

The knitting pattern is available in English, German and Dutch.

What you will need to knit this hat:

  • 2 skeins of a DK/Worsted/Medium weight merino yarn (50 g)

  • Circular needles size 4 mm (US 6/UK 8) / 40 cm (16 inch). Use short needles for this cable length (when buying fixed circular needles it is standard that the needles are short for this length). If you don’t like to knit with circular needles, you can use double pointed needles in size 4 mm (US 6/UK 8)

  • To work the crown: double pointed needles size 4 mm (US 6/UK 8) or, when using the Magic Loop method, circular needles size 4 mm (US 6/UK 8) with a long cable (min. 80 cm (31½ inch))

  • 5 stitch markers to mark the beginning of the round and the decreases

  • Tapestry needle to close the hat and weave in all ends

Used techniques:

  • Long Tail cast on
  • 1x1 ribbing (knits & purls)
  • decreases (right leaning & left leaning)
  • Magic Loop Method or working with double pointed needles
