Inspired by a line from a poem which describes morning mist as “dew-cloth” and “dream-drapery,” these socks are knit top-down in a simple 4-row ribbed lace repeat that resembles tiny tendrils of mist rising off the surface of the ocean.

Instructions have been written for both dpns and circular needles. Both written and chart instructions are provided for the Ocean Mist ribbed lace repeat, worked in the round over a multiple of 6 stitches.

You will need a skein of sock yarn (approx. 400-420 yards) and 2.5mm (US size 1.5) needles (either dpns or circular needles) to make this pattern. The pattern is written for Women’s sizes small (US shoe sizes 5-6), medium (US shoe sizes 7-9), and large (US shoe sizes 10-12). If your feet or the feet you are knitting for do not fall within the sizes listed above but you would still like to knit these socks, please do reach out and I will gladly work with you to adjust the pattern to meet your needs!

This pattern has been test knit, but please do not hesitate to contact me if you have questions or encounter any problems while knitting!

Knit-spiration - “Mist” by Henry David Thoreau
Low-anchored cloud,
Newfoundland air,
Fountain-head and source of rivers,
Dew-cloth, dream-drapery,
And napkin spread by fays;
Drifting meadow of the air,
Where bloom the daisied banks and violets,
And in whose fenny labyrinth
The bittern booms and heron wades;
Spirit of lakes and seas and rivers, —
Bear only perfumes and the scent
Of healing herbs to just men’s fields.
