These mittens are a quick knit, great for gift knitting. They are knit from the cuff up, in the round. The colourwork was kept simple in this design so that it’s very approachable for a new-to-colourwork knitter (but still engaging for seasoned knitters). Video tutorial links are included to guide you along.
SIZES - 1, 2 (3, 4)
FINISHED MEASUREMENTS -
Hand circumference: 7”, 8” (9”, 10”) 17.5, 20 (22.5, 25) cm.
Recommended to be worn with 0” 0 cm of ease around the hand.
To determine your fit, measure the circumference of your palm at it’s widest point, excluding your thumb. If you are between sizes, size up.
Size 1 (fits 7” 17.5 cm)
Size 2 (fits 8” 20 cm)
Size 3 (fits 9” 22.5 cm)
Size 4 (fits 10” 25 cm)
GAUGE - Stockinette stitch: 12 stitches by 17 rounds in 2” 5 cm.
Colourwork: 12 stitches by 14 rounds in 2” 5 cm.
Using US size 4 3.5 mm needles, measured in the round after blocking.
YARN - Light sample is knit with
Harrisville Designs Daylights and Nightshades, Woolen-spun American Cormo and Wool 250 yds/229 m/100 g
MC - “826”/CC - “Insomnia”
Dark sample is knit with my own handspun.
Any DK weight yarn could be used.
YARDAGE -
MC - 116 yds/106 m, 150 yds/137 m (170 yds/155 m, 187 yds/171 m)
CC - 19 yds/17 m, 22 yds/20 m (25 yds/23 m, 28 yds/26 m)
Yardage calculations were made for the longer cuff version. More or less yarn may be needed depending on the length of the cuff and hands.
NEEDLES - US size 3 3.25 mm and US size 4 3.5 mm
36” 90 cm circular for Magic Loop, 9” 23 cm circular or DPNs depending on your preference for.
Optional: US size 5 3.75 mm in your preferred needles to size up for colourwork.
Note: The majority of the pattern instructions are written for small circular needles with the hand decreases and the thumb using DPNs or magic loop. Feel free to use DPNs or magic loop for the entire project if that is your preference.
