Here is a free knitting pattern of my own design for a pair of very simple fingerless mittens (with thumb gusset). I wanted something that was simple, sturdy and practical for riding my bike in cold weather. After searching high and low for the perfect patten I blew caution to the wind and decided to make my own pattern - my first attempt at designing something with shaping on it. I call them my “Old School” fingerless mittens because, once I had finished making them I noticed they were in the colours of my P.E. kit from primary school :-/ and I suppose they have a retro feel to them.

I knitted them in Drops Lima alpaca blend double knitting yarn on size 3.25 and 3.75mm DPNs. They came perfectly out of just one 50g ball of yarn and for the contrast stripe I used some leftover DK yarn. One thing I will say though, is that because they are knitted in the round the stripe kind of spirals around the mitten - rather then creating a complete “ring” of knitting around the mitten, which is not that desirable but it does not really show too much.

They’ll keep your hands superwarm and you’ll still be able to point at stuff!

UPDATE: If you would prefer that the stripes are “jogless” (i.e. a full loop rather than a spiral) then you can find out how to do that using this tutorial - http://techknitting.blogspot.cz/2007/01/jogless-stripes.html
