OLDAMBT MITTENS

  • gorgeous, grainy & gronings -

The Oldambt mitten design is inspirated by the numerous wheat fields that are situated in the most north eastern, a bit harsh, part of the Netherlands. It is called Oldambt, also known as The Weath Republic in the province of Groningen. During summer the freshgreen spring colours of wheat and rapeseed are slowly turning into all shades of gold and yellow. And when it is harvesting time in early autumn, there is this smell of wheat in the air.

These most caracterising endless warm yellow wheat fields were my source in this design. I choose a matching, rich and deep yellow colour to knit them and experimented with stitches to create wheat culms and kernels.

The Oldambt Mittens are knitted in pure and soft merino70/silk30 yarn ; Manos del Uruguay Fino colour 424 Gilt 100 g = 490yards / 450 m

You need one skein for these mittens.

The gauge of this yarn is 24 st = 10 cm, knitted on needle size 3,5 eu size Of course you might use another yarn, as long as you choose one with the same yardage and gauge.

It is always recommendable to swatch, to be sure that you won ‘t be disappointed by the results. Needles ; 4 doublepointed needles size 3 eu and 4 doublepointed needles size 3,5 eu

You will also need a stitchholder, stitchmarkers and a blunt embroidery needle

The pattern has written descriptions of gusset, thumb and special stitches and a description in charts.
