On The Flipside
A LOVE LETTER TO THE “WRONG” SIDE OF THE FABRIC
I always have a crisis of conscience using the term “Wrong Side” while writing my patterns. Who’s to say it’s wrong?? Sometimes the opposite side is just as beautiful as the right side. These two-colour stripes are just that - good-looking at all angles. If this is wrong, I don’t wanna be right.
On The Flipside is a raglan pullover worked seamlessly from the top-down, with the start of the yoke worked flat to shape the front neckline. After the neckline is shaped, the garment is joined to work in the round. Front, back, and sleeves are worked in the round as a yoke, with compound shaping within along the raglan lines to provide an ideal fit across all nine sizes. The sweater is worked in stockinette stitch on the front and back sections, with reverse stockinette on the sleeves. These stitch patterns are reversible, so that the pullover may be worn inside out if desired. Once the yoke is divided for body and sleeves, the body is worked in the round with minimal decreases. Two options are given for the sleeves: one with a slimmer sleeve and narrow, short cuff, and the other a wider sleeve with a wide, long cuff. The collar is picked up and worked twice as long as required so that it may be folded in and seamed, to hide the pick up line, in order that the sweater may be worn reversed. Unfortunately, you will need to weave in the ends while working flat, but for a two-colour version, I have a trick to hide these colour changes once you are working in the round so that you do not need to break the yarn. If you are planning to do a scrappy project, I don’t recommend making it reversible. You may consider braiding the ends along the inside of the work, instead. Trying to weave in a thousand ends that look neat on both sides is a bit of a nightmare. But if you are up for a challenge, go for it!
HOW TO CHOOSE YOUR SIZE
This pattern has 9 size options. Using the recipients chest measurement, choose a size that will give 6 inches (15cm) of positive ease at bust (the difference between body’s smaller measurements and the garment’s larger measurements at this point). It is also intended to provide 4 to 4.5 inches (10 to 11.5cm) of positive ease at bicep. Photos shown size 4 with 8 inches (20.5cm) of positive ease. The most fool-proof method is to measure a similar fitting garment in your wardrobe and choose a size that matches. See schematic in photos.
