The Open Spaces Cowl works up quickly and only uses one skein of yarn. It has the versatility of making it longer for an infinity scarf or open scarf. The choice is yours!
The Open Spaces Cowl is also the perfect autumn accessory as its lightweight and will complement your style.
The Open Spaces Cowl is part of Oombawka Design Crochet’s Scarf of the Month Club for August 2018. My pattern is a contribution pattern to her blog.
Materials
• Yarn – Cascade 220 Superwash, 100% superwash wool, 220 yards. It is listed as a #3/#4 weight yarn but it feels more like a worsted weight to me.
• Hook – J/6mm Odyssey (affiliate link)
• Notions – needle for weaving in ends, blocking board and pins for blocking (optional)
Size
34” L x 7 ½” W
Gauge
Not necessarily important for this project.
Stitch Abbreviation
Ch – chain; st(s) – stitch(es); sk – skip; sp(s) – space(s); ea – each; sc – single crochet; dc – double crochet; Fsc – foundation single crochet
Special Stitches
Fsc (Foundation Single Crochet) - ch2, (does not count as st), insert hook into first ch, yo, pull up loop (2 loops on hook), yo, pull through one loop (2 loops on hook), yo, pull through both loops, one Fsc made. See video tutorial here from Moogly.
V-st – dc, ch2, dc in the same st.
Post V-st – dc, ch2, dc around the post of the stitch of the previous row. In this case, it will be the sc of the previous row.
Experience Level
Experienced Beginner
Pattern Notes
• Ch1 does not equal a st; place the sc in the same st as the ch1
• Ch3 equals a dc stitch
• Place your last st of each row on the top of the turning chain (the ch3) of the previous row.
• The stitch count will be shown in brackets < > at the end of each row.
• To make the Open Spaces Cowl longer, simply repeat the pattern to your desired length.
• To make your Open Spaces Cowl wider, the multiples for your starting Fsc are 10+2
• When repeating the pattern, Row 7 will act as the beginning of the pattern repeat. It is essentially replacing the Fsc. End your pattern repeat on a Row 6.
