Note: This pattern is no longer free, due to general abuse of free Ravelry patterns on a well-known auction site. However, if you purchase this pattern and then send us your project link, we’ll be happy to send you via Ravelry another of our patterns free (your choice of pattern). This pattern was designed for a knitalong, so if your forum is organising a not-for-profit KAL we would be happy to send it free to your KAL knitters. Cablemabel.

Socks in both top-down and toe-up format, originally designed to conform to the self-stripe sock knitalong organised by the Sock Knitters Anonymous group on Ravelry in June 2011. The project is knitted in a wavy stitch pattern to manipulate the stripes in the yarn, and a rolled top is added to the socks to give a straight line which shows up the waves by contrast.

Description from pattern:
“Short summer socks designed in feather and fan stitch for self-striping yarn with stripes of up to approx 6-10 rows. There is a hidden row of eyelet holes under the rolled top edge, so you can thread through a ribbon or plied yarn if required, and tie it at the front or side.” This refers to what is believed to be the original, traditional feather and fan stitch pattern, and not to one of the many variations of it. It has been charted and adapted here for in-the-round knitting.

The pattern includes two separate, fully-written patterns plus charts for leg and instep for both toe-up and top-down versions. The toe-up pattern gives instructions for two-at-a-time on two circular needles, and the top-down version requires 4 dpns.

The pattern also includes instructions for making a knitted spiral tie cord to complement the wavy stitch pattern.

A larger size can be made using 3mm needles, with a gauge of 28 sts per 4in over st st.
