This small shawl is a fun little project that keeps you interested while also being a moderately easy knit. The shawlette starts with a garter tab, and the edging is knit using my favorite stitch, garter stitch. The rest of the kerchief is knit in stockinette stitch with two textured sections spread out evenly. The textured stitch pattern is simply knit using just knits and purls only.
Inspired by JRR Tolkien’s Hobbit trilogy, the textured sections represent his phrase: “Over hill and dale” that Tolkien often refers to in his books and the movies (but you can still knit it if you haven’t read any of the books or watched any of the movies!).

Yarn: I used Yarn Bee Authentic Hand-Dyed 400 yards (365 meters) in color Zahara, but you can use any other fingering weight-DK weight yarn you would like. Make sure you have at least 210-245 yards (192-224 meters) (note: fingering weight will help the shawlette/kerchief to be more drapey and flowy, while DK weight will make it more firm and less drapey).

Needles: the needles I used to get gauge were size 5 US 20” circular knitting needles. It is possible to use straight knitting needles, though they might be tougher to work with, taking into account how many stitches will be on your needles.

Gauge: 18.5 stitches and 32 rows over 4 inches in stockinette stitch knit flat (blocked) using size 5 US knitting needles (or size to get gauge). The gauge is not very crucial, though it will affect the yards/meters of yarn needed and finished size of your shawlette.

Finished Measurements: 30” (76 cm) measured across the top of the shawlette/kerchief, and 11” (27.9 cm) tall (blocked) if gauge is met.
