This shawl is one of those knits that seems to fly off the needles. It’s soft, a bit fluffy, and has just enough lace and texture to keep things fun without making you think too hard. Garter ridges and simple lace do all the work, and the blown yarn makes it feel light but cozy. The shawl has a touch of elegance to it, but without making it feel too fancy.

The name of this design came from the lace pattern. As soon as I started working up the lace pattern, it was giving me beach vibes. The Sandpiper Shawl just came to mind and seemed to be a perfect title for this design. I asked a friend to help me choose between three name options and this is what she liked the best.

It’s super fun to make—and great for when you just want something relaxing. And when it’s finished, you’ve got a beautiful, wearable shawl that looks nice with pretty much everything (plus, you made it yourself!).

If you want, you could make your shawl bigger by just adding more repeats.

Yarn: You’ll need about 492-500 yards of heavy worsted/aran weight yarn to make this shawl. The yarn featured in the sample is K+C Cloudpaca 164 yards worsted weight in color Toasted Almond.

Needles: The needles I used to get gauge were size US 8 36” circular knitting needles. The shawl is knit flat, but I highly recommend circular knitting needles because of the amount of increasing stitches.

Gauge: (before blocking) 15 sts and 22 rows over 4” in stockinette stitch knit flat.

Finished Measurements: (after blocking) the shawl measures approx. 60.5 inches in wingspan and 42 inches in depth.
