Łowickie Domki ~ Blue Cottages of Łowicz is a shawl inspired by the wool itself - the Zelazna Wool.
Zelazna Wool comes from Polish lowland sheep breed called Żelaźnieńska Sheep/Zelazna Sheep. The breed was developed in a place called Żelazna by crossing the primitive, now extinct, Łowicz sheep with Polish merino and Leicester Longwool.
Łowicz is a small town near Warsaw, known for its very unique folklore: stripey woollen outfits, beautiful flowery embroidery (flowers are a dominant feature in many Polish Folk Outfits), paper cut-outs and its painted blue cottages. And it is those Blue Cottages of Łowicz that are the theme of my shawl.

Pattern Notes:
This pattern is suitable for any yarn weight and any yarn – not just Zelazna Wool, but it was designed with Zelazna Wool in mind. Pattern includes detailed instructions to knit the Sample shown in photos, but also encourages you to create your own version.

I used Zelazna Wool in 2-ply, sport weight version. It’s about 125gr/400m/per hank (which is about 320gr/100gr). This yarn comes in one natural shade of grey; I dyed portion of it blue, but the scarf can be easily knitted in one colour only, or more than two.

Yarn usage:
Blue (MC) – about 160gr/515m
Grey (CC) – about 50gr/160m
TOTAL: about 210gr/675m

Gauge:
Not as important. Size will depend on your chosen yarn, needle size and your own personal gauge.

Construction and Size:
This is a simple long rectangular scarf/shawl.
Lace motif representing an image of a house is directional in character, therefore the shawl is knitted in two parts which are then grafted together (otherwise houses on one end would end up upside down).
Shawl size is easily adjustable both widthwise and lengthwise. Guidelines in the pattern.

Happy knitting,
