From the “The Romaunt of the Rose
… But emperesses, and duchesses,
Thise quenes, and eek thise countesses,
Thise abbesses, and eek Bigyns,
These grete ladyes palasyns,
These Ioly knightes, and baillyves,
Thise nonnes, and thise burgeis wyves, …

In Old English palasyns means ladies “belonging to a palace” or “connected to the court”. I saw this word quoted as part of Chaucer’s version of “The Romaunt of the Rose”, and I really loved the shape and the meaning of the word. This Renaissance motif cowl recalls a time gone by when “grete ladyes palasyns” graced the corridors and halls of beautiful palaces.
