Pathos is a cozy, generously-sized cowl based on the Retort shawl! It’s a big, capelet-like knit with nice textural details. Knit in sockweight yarn at a light gauge, it’s the opposite of a quick, forgettable knitting project in many ways, but more satisfying for that reason. .

You’ll need to know how to work (or be comfortable learning) wrap and turn short rows, increases, and easy YO lace motifs.

Materials

  • 2 skeins or about 660-680 yards Malabrigo Yarn Sock
  • 1 24” circular needle in US4-6/3.25-4.0mm, or size needed for gauge.
  • Tapestry needle
  • Removable stitch marker(s)

Gauge:
Gauge is 19 sts and 36 rows over 4”/10cm of blocked stockinette stitch, worked flat. Please be sure to check your gauge! For a shawl, this is less important for fit, but remains important for size and yarn estimates.

Measurements
Pathos Cowl measures 18.75”/48cm deep through the center spine, and 17”/43cm across the top, and about 20.5”/52cm. (If you’d like a neckwarmer-style cowl, you can achieve this easily by knitting at a tighter gauge; just make sure the longest side of the triangle is equal to or greater than the head circumference of the intended wearer to make sure it’ll fit.)
