PEABERRY
The Peaberry shawl is inspired by the leaves and beans of the coffee plant. Normally the coffee fruit contains two beans, but sometimes only one bean is fertilised and develops. These are called peaberries, and are oval instead of flattened like other coffee beans. About 5% of the harvest are peaberries. Some people argue that peaberry coffee is more flavourful because the beans roast more evenly.

Peaberry is a triangular lace shawl with a slight crescent shape. The shawl is worked top-down with alternating leaves and coffee beans down the sides. The pattern is adapted for the yarn from the Swedish alpaca farm Wermlandsalpaca, but is easy to adapt and works well with any sport, dk or fingering weight yarn, or whichever weight is preferred.

WERMLANDSALPACKA
The Swedish alpaca farm Wermlandsalpacka is situated in the small town Kil outside Karlstad in the western parts of Sweden. Their alpacas come in all different colors and their fiber is mostly sold to a local fashion brand. Some fiber is saved and is sent for spinning, and the colors vary each year. The yarn is spun in Sweden and is a lovely soft 2-ply in the alpacas’ natural colors. The yarn can be ordered directly from the farm.

GAUGE
The gauge on this shawl is not important, the size is determined by how many repeats you make. For a standard sized shawl in sport weight, estimate about 200 g.
