Peacock Feathers Hat
PATTERN NOTES
This hat is inspired by the Peacock series of stained-glass lampshades, created in the early 1900’s by the Louis Comfort Tiffany Studios.
In designing the pattern, I was stunned to realize just how ingenious the Tiffany designers were--every single line and intersection are carefully planned and executed. Truly brilliant. Unfortunately, knitting isn’t quite the same medium as stained glass and bronze, so I had to adjust things quite a bit, to make the lampshade into a hat.
I’m pretty happy with how it came out--I think it still has the spirit of the original!
SIZES: The hat shown is a women’s medium hat, made of 4 repeated sections of the pattern. Instructions include changes for a 3-repeat hat and a 5-repeat hat.
MATERIALS NEEDED:
- One set double-pointed needles, Size 2
- One circular DP needle, Size 2
- Lots of colors of yarn (see list in Photos section)
- Tapestry needle
- Great peace of mind
YARN REQUIREMENTS: I used 39 colors from the KnitPicks “Palette” line for this project. Some were just a single 10 inch strand. Black was used the most, and came to half a skein.
There is plenty of room for substitution of colors. This is a great hat for using up your stash!
I used this video to figure out how to loop and knit left-to-right, in order to knit this without stranding.
