This is my original design crochet pattern for a periodic cicada in both its resting and flying forms. The pattern is written in English and is illustrated with in progress and completed photos. Pattern is 14 pages.

The pattern is crocheted in a continuous spiral and requires knowledge of the following stitches (including increases and decreases): chain and single crochet.

Item size will depend on the weight of yarn used. I crocheted the sample with Caron Simply Soft Satin worsted weight (#4) acrylic yarn and a size G crochet hook. You will need about 1-2 ounces of black, 2-3 ounces or white and less than 1 ounce of brown. You will also need a size 5 (1.8mm) crochet hook and a small amount of red size 5 pearl cotton for the eyes. Other supplies needed include polyester fiberfill, heavy gauge craft wire, and two 10mm wiggle eyes or half round shank buttons.

Flying cicada sample size is about 12” (30.5 cm) from wing tip to wing tip and about 5 3/4” (14.6 cm) body length. The resting cicada is 7 1/2” (19 cm) from “nose” to wing tip and about 3” (7.6 cm) tall.
