Petali ~ Italian for “petals”
The Petali Slipover is a versatile garment that can be elegantly layered over dresses or blouses for added warmth in a woolen version or worn on its own as a summer top when worked using a plant-based yarn.
Construction
This slipover is worked sideways seamlessly and is started by casting on stitches for the front and back panel. The right shoulder is then worked back and forth by creating a scalloped edge followed by shoulder increases. The front and back panels are then worked separately while the neckline is shaped before joining them again to work the left shoulder. After shaping the left shoulder with decreases, another scalloped edge is worked to complete the front and back panel. Underarm panels are then worked to close the sides of the slipover. Working these panels sideways offers the possibility to customize the finished bust circumference of the slipover for a perfect fit. Finally, the scalloped hem and collar are both worked in the round and folded seamlessly while binding off the stitches. Options to work the slipover to a cropped or regular length are offered, as well as the choice to work a deep or a regular armhole.
Sizing
Please note that the bust circumference of this garment is customizable, so choosing a size is done differently than your typical knitting pattern! Follow this link to choose a size with your preferred amount of ease.
Sizes 1 (2, 3, 4) 5, 6, 7 (8, 9, 10) can be worked to obtain finished bust circumference measurements (A) in the ranges indicated in the finished measurements table. See finished measurements table and schematics at the end of the pattern pictures for more information.
Recommended ease:
• 2 to 10 cm / 0.75 to 4” of positive ease at the bust for the slipover version.
• 0 to 5 cm / 0 to 2” of positive ease at the bust to wear the slipover on its own as a summer top. For this version, it is recommended to choose the regular armhole depth.
Samples
The rust sample is shown in a size 2 with 8 cm / 3.25” of positive ease on a bust of 86 cm / 34.5” in the cropped length and with deep armholes. The cream sample is shown in a size 2 with 2 cm / 0.75” of positive ease on a bust of 86 cm / 34.5” in the regular length and with regular armholes.
Yarn
For a cropped length slipover with deep armholes, you will need approx. 440 (460, 490, 540) 585, 605, 645 (665, 690, 715) m / 480 (505, 535, 590) 640, 660, 705 (730, 755, 780) yds of DK weight yarn.
For a regular length slipover with regular armholes, you will need approx. 515 (545, 580, 640) 690, 720, 765 (790, 830, 860) m / 565 (595, 635, 700) 755, 790, 835 (865, 910, 945) yds of DK weight yarn.
Gauge
21 stitches x 30 rows = 10 cm x 10 cm / 4” x 4” on 4 mm / US 6 needles in stockinette stitch after blocking.
Please note that due to the construction of this slipover, the row gauge is just as important as the stitch gauge!
Needles
• 4 mm / US 6 circular needles of at least 80 cm / 32” for the main fabric. Or needle size needed to reach gauge.
• 3.5 mm / US 4 circular needles of at least 80 cm / 32” for the shoulder edges and the hem and of 40 cm / 16” for the collar. Or needles two sizes smaller than the needles used for the main fabric.
