Petiole is a light, organic-shaped shawlette inspired by the delicate structure of leaves and the way new growth unfolds in nature. It is worked from one tip to the center with increases, then continues to the other tip with decreases, creating a continuous flowing shape with a natural symmetry.

The stitch pattern expands gradually along the body of the shawlette, forming a soft, elegant drape with beautiful movement and texture. Blocking is essential to open up the fabric and fully reveal the delicate structure.

This design is ideal for fingering-weight yarns, especially those with good stitch definition and natural fibers that block well. It’s a relaxing yet engaging project, offering rhythmic knitting with just enough variation to keep things interesting.

The pattern includes both charts and fully written instructions, and it has also been tested.

Knitting needle and other notions
US2 ½ /3mm, with 20” / 50 cm cable or straight needle
Stitch markers, tapestry needle

Gauge
26 stitches x 30 rows = 4”x4” / 10x10cm
Gauge is measured on the scarf laid flat and relaxed.
Gauge isn’t crucial for this project, but differences will affect the finished size, as well as the required yardage.

Final size
11”/28cm wide and 71”/180cm long (blocked)
