The Piccadilly Scrunchie is the ideal stash buster for those 50g scraps! I love making a matching accessory with my sweater project scraps!

The scrunchie is knit using a worsted weight (or equivalent weight of yarns held together) and a lace weight mohair for the frill. Because this project is a scrappy accessory, gauge (20x24) is more of a guideline than a necessity.

The Piccadilly Scrunchie is knit in two segments in the round; first using the worsted weight yarn to create the “scrunchie” part, then the last round is knit to the cast on edge around an elastic to create a closed tube. The mohair frill is then knit from the row of stitches that closed the tube, and a ruffle is created.

I encourage you to experiment with the yarns that you use in your scrunchie! Several of my samples were knit with Kelbourne Woolens Germantown DK held double with a mohair. I wove the end of the DK yarn into the tube of the scrunchie to use the mohair on its own for the frill. This pattern is a fun way to play with yarn combinations and celebrate the whimsical texture that you get with a single strand of mohair held on its own.
