Pin Up Rainbows is a customizable shawl that is knit using assigned pooling yarn. Assigned pooling is the magical technique of assigning certain stitches or groups of stitches to a certain colored section of your yarn. I call these colored sections, color bursts! Yay! This fun little shawl looks like it might be difficult, but I promise it is rather easy and fun!

Yarn: (NOTE: if you want a DK weight shawl or even a worsted one then dooo it! Use whatever weight you want!)
Fingering weight assigned pooling yarn! Yaaas! What’s that mean? For this shawl it means that you will need a skein or skeins of yarn that are mostly one color, which have a color burst section of a different color or colors than the main color of the skein. This color burst section should measure around twelve inches. It is better to have a skein with a larger circumference rather than a short circumference skein.

The yarn used in this pattern is: One and a half skeins of Squish Magic from A Whimsical Wood Yarn Co. (420yds/100g), in the color “A Big Ass Love”. I had a 60g ball left after I bound off the shawl resulting in a small/medium sized shawl. I would have kept going but I needed to finish this bad ass shawl so I could share it with you all. I recommend two skeins of yarn for sure!

Watch this ridiculous video of me showing you what you need for yarn. Here I try to explain the whole color burst thing, Wheee!

Needles: US size 4 (3.5mm) 24” circular needles.

Notions: A darning needle to weave in your ends and tools for blocking.

Gauge: I didn’t add gauge here because this little baby will look amazing in whatever gauge you are using and since you stop whenever you are satisfied with your shawl size…well it doesn’t matter! So, let’s not stress over gauge this time mmmk? K great!

Finished Measurements: Finished shawl measures whatever you want it to!
