Rivers belong where they can ramble
Eagles belong where they can fly
I’ve got to be where my spirit can run free
Got to find my corner of the sky
-Pippin, the Musical (1972; lyrics by Stephen Schwartz and a book by Roger O. Hirson)

In 1977, during my senior year of high school, I was taken to the Pan American Gymnastics Cup in New York City, NY with a small group of other gymnasts by our high school coach, Carol Nygaard. She had a friend near the city, so we had somewhere to stay and although the trip was all about gymnastics and seeing the sights; when you grow up in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, the chance to get to see a Broadway Play seemed unrealistic. But we did get to attend, and we saw Pippin! On Broadway. The musical was a huge success and I danced in a troupe called MagicToDo with 10 guys and 10 girls where we traveled around the city performing at halftimes, events and at nursing homes. This theme song of the play has had a special place in my heart all these years and when I was brainstorming a name for this openwork poncho – I thought the 1970s and Pippin was the perfect one.

YARN: 3 (3, 4) skeins KnitCircus Divine DK weight 260 yards/100 g per skein

Easy, fast, two row repeat - the best thing you’ll have to throw on and run out the door!

NOTE: Even though this is a multi-purpose item and fit does not have to be precise, be sure and achieve gauge. A difference in gauge may result in needing more or less yarn.

Feathered Lace and Ladder Stitch -It is hard to measure this over the lace stitch pattern, but you can count by 4 stitches across the pattern repeat and measure that way AND if you can stretch the double YO stitch (the ladder) by pulling hard to more than 1” in width – it’s too loose. There is a YouTube video linked in the pattern for this stitch pattern.

NOTIONS: Stitch markers, tapestry needle.

SAMPLE was knit using three skeins Knit Circus Yarns Divine DK (260 yds/238 m/100 g) 100% superwash merino in colorway Wild Child Sparkles and weighed 273 g using 710 yards.
