Pixel Socks
There are two things that make these socks different from other knitted socks:
1. The colour pattern is formed by the easiest way to knit stranded colourwork (no complicated charts, no floats, and no issues with knitting tension).
2. The shaping of the toe part and the heel mimics the natural shape of a human foot. These socks are comfortable, they do not slide off your feet, and they do not wear out quickly.
NOTES
Pixel Socks are worked in the round from the toe up.
The socks featured in the photos have a classic crew length. The pattern also explains how to make these socks in an ankle or quarter length (see instructions in steps 6 and 7 of the pattern).
The pattern is supported by 17 tutorials. Click the underlined name of the technique to read and watch the tutorial.
SIZE
Children’s shoe sizes – 9, 12 (US sizes) / 25, 30 (European sizes) / approximately fits 3 and 6 year old kids.
Women’s shoe sizes – 5, 7, 9 (US sizes) / 35/36, 37/38, 39/40 (European sizes)

YARN
Any sock yarn (wool or wool blend) that has the equivalent of 200 m / 210 yds in 50 g / 1.7 oz (it is consistent with the Sport weight that is marked by “2” on the yarn label).
You will need around 140, 160 / 180, 200, 210 / 200, 220, 230, 240 m (150, 170 / 200, 220, 230 / 220, 240, 250, 260 yds) of yarn in the main colour, and around 70, 80 / 90, 100, 110 / 100, 110, 120, 120 m (80, 90 / 100, 110, 120 / 110, 120, 130, 140 yds) of yarn in a contrasting colour to make a pair of socks in a classic crew length.
You will need a bit less yarn if you choose to make your socks shorter.
The socks featured in the photo are made with Knitca Socks yarn in Burgundy as the main colour and Beige as a contrasting colour.
NEEDLES
Circular or double-pointed needles in size 2.75 mm (US size 2).
I find it more comfortable to make these socks using the magic loop technique, and the pattern is written with this setup in mind.
You can also work with two circular needles or with five double-pointed needles.
To work with one long needle and the magic loop technique, the circular needle should be at least 80 cm / 32” long.
NOTIONS
1 locking stitch marker, a thin wool needle or a thick sewing needle, a row counter (optional but recommended).
GAUGE
29 stitches x 36 rounds = 10 x 10 cm / 4 x 4” in stockinette stitch.
32 stitches x 35 rounds = 10 x 10 cm / 4 x 4” in the pixel colour pattern
