This standard gauge (4.5mm) single bed machine knitting project is a fun opportunity to familiarize yourself with combining 2 techniques to get surprising and beautiful results. (Intarsia) + (Slip Stitch) = Plaid!

Set yourself up so that you are without distractions - this technique does require some concentration. That said, once you find your flow, this is an easy afternoon project. Please note that your machine must be capable of knitting intarsia (whether it is a setting on your main carriage, or a separate intarsia carriage).

This pattern is an 8 page PDF with detailed instructions including an explanation of techniques with video links, pattern layout, detailed schematic, and some additional tips regarding knitting with Brother and/or Silver Reed machines.

1 main color for the solid areas plus 4-6 colors for the “warp” (vertical columns of intarsia) and 4-6 contrast colors for the “weft” (slip stitch rows). You can double up some of the same colors in both the intarsia and slip stitch rows. Don’t spend too much time worrying about which color to use - just pick colors you love. Allow yourself to be surprised by unusual, beautiful, and unexpected color combinations. HAVE FUN!!This project is a great opportunity for some stash busting!
