This is a pattern for a pair of fingerless mittens, ideal for walking the dog when you need your fingers free for poo picking, lead clipping on and off, and treat dispensing!

Featuring a laidback tall pointy-nose hound on the front with a band of paw prints around the wrist. The palm has a repeating pattern of hares’ heads and ears. The mitts have gusseted thumbs for a better fit and the thumb itself is created by the afterthought method where the stitches are left on a placeholder yarn and picked up and knitted after the rest of the mitt is completed. Mary Jane Mucklestone has a brilliant photo tutorial on her website that explains the technique in clear detail:

Sizes: my wrist measures 6 1/2” and my hand is 8 1/2” at the widest part below the thumb, and 7” around the fingers. The mitts are quite stretchy but larger sizes could easily be accomplished by going up a needle size (or down a size for a smaller fit).

These mitts do not take a lot of yarn. I used the Scheepjes Our Tribe, as I love the colours, but any sock yarn would do and you’d have plenty left over for a pair of socks!
