To celebrate the newest season of Doctor Who, this cowl was originally the “Police Box MKAL”.
Here is the finished design all in one piece: We had fun creating a yoked cowl with TARDIS windows, Daleks, and rivets! Can you say EXTERMIKNIT?

There is also a fun matching hat pattern available: The EXTERMIKNIT! Hat!

About the pattern:
The pattern level is intermediate; it features several areas of stranded colorwork and is knit in the round, partly using the magic loop technique. It is sized for adults (one size fits all).

Finished Measurements:
About 7” high at neck and 23” circumference at top, about 12” deep and 72” circumference at bottom (after blocking)

Materials:
430 yds of fingering weight yarn for the MC
Plus 200 yds of fingering weight yarn in 1 color, and 100 yds each of 3 additional colors – see pairing tips below; OR any String Quintet that works with the color pairing tips; OR 100 yards each of 5 different colors.

Samples shown used:
Lighter sample: MC - Lorna’s Laces Shepherd Sock (100g / 435 yds) in color ‘Cermak’
Lorna’s Laces Staccato (25g / 107 yds) in colors A – ‘Pewter’ (x2), B – ‘Natural’, C – ‘Charcoal’, D – ‘Aqua’

Darker sample: MC - Lorna’s Laces Shepherd Sock in color ‘Bigger on the Inside’, plus 1 Lorna’s Laces String Quintet (127g / 525 yds) in color ‘Police Box’
To substitute for the sold-out String Quintet in ‘Police Box’ you can use these Staccato colors a la carte:
A / E – ‘Pewter’ (x2), B – ‘Natural’, C – ‘Charcoal’, D – ‘Fjord’

Size 2.5mm / US 1.5 40” circular needle (or size to obtain gauge)

Stitch Markers, Darning needle

Gauge: 27 sts x 30 rows = 4” / 10cm in stockinette, unblocked
PLEASE TAKE TIME TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE.

Colors:
For those of you who bought the Police Box kit, here are your colors:
MC - the large skein of sock in ‘Bigger on the Inside’
Color A - the lighter gray from the string quintet
Color B - the natural from the string quintet
Color C - the light blue from the string quintet
Color D - the charcoal from the string quintet
Color E - the dark blue from the string quintet

If you are using a different String Quintet, or picking your colors á la carte, please follow the color pairing tips below.
Please Note: Color E can be substituted with a second skein (or an additional 100 yds) of color A, as I have done with my sample.

Color pairing tips:
If you would like to try a different color combination, here are a few general tips:
Rules for picking colors are simple - Color B should be something quite light or luminous that contrasts nicely with the MC (I would suggest natural, white, pastels or neons), and Colors C and D need a high contrast with each other, as those will be used together for the Dalek section.
