This is an Assigned Pooling Crochet Cowl.

A continuous loop and color changes make this project fun and interesting. Use two stitches for the whole project, half double crochet, and the puff stitch.

After the first row, it’s vacation crochet! The cowl is crocheted in the round, it’s reversible and there are no seams, shaping, or counting.

Let the yarn do all the hard work for you. This project uses a DK weight yarn and a US J(6 mm) hook. Look for a 2-colored yarn, labeled Assigned Pooling. The main color usually is about 70% of the hank, with the contrast color pooled in one section, the remaining 30%.

The pattern is written for 2 sizes: small and large. For a 1-skein project, make the small, it fits close to the neck. The large uses 2-skeins and will give you the most versatility. Wear it looped double, around your shoulders (like a shrug) or crossed in the front.

The yarn has 2 colors, a main color, and a contrast color. The project uses 2 corresponding stitches. When you work with the main color, make half double crochets. At the contrast color, make the bobble puff stitch. For me, the bobble puff stitch is the easiest to make and my hook slides through the loops.

The Foundation Half Double Crochet beginning takes a little concentration, and it’s worth the extra effort! The bottom and top edges match and it’s a stretchy edge.

Use this written pattern as a starting point. The idea is so easy to change or customize. If you prefer a medium size loop, start with an in-between stitch count. Sometimes it helps to use your favorite cowl as a guide. You can stop when your project is just the right size, or when you run out of yarn! If bobble puffs aren’t your jam, easily substitute a different stitch. Choose a textured stitch that begins and ends in the same stitch to maintain the stitch count.
