Powerlicious Hap is the latest design in my Hap series. This gorgeous heirloom, which is a combination of a simple garter stitch central panel surrounded by a contrasting two-color Brioche stitch border, would make a great gift for a newborn baby or would look equally lovely draped beautifully over your shoulder or lap.
Although it was designed as a blanket, it would also make a lovely folded shawl.
Why did I call this shawl a hap? Haps are shawls that were traditionally worn by Shetland women to keep them warm while working out and about on the cold windy isles; the word hap means to cover, wrap or keep warm. This traditional design, which can be square or triangular, is enjoying a well deserved revival today.

Powerlicious Hap / Shawl Construction:

The Powerlicious Hap comes in two sizes and is worked seamlessly. This beautiful eye catcher is knitted from the center outwards, using the traditional square shape, with a center panel in a simple squishy garter stitch. The square is worked from one point of the diamond to the opposite point (knitted diagonally back and forth). You start by increasing the first half and then you decrease for the second half. After that stitches are picked up around the edges and a two-color brioche stitch border is worked outwards from the center square. Traditionally, this design is knitted without any sewing being necessary.
Why not knit a pure white version for a christening, which could become an elegant and beautiful family heirloom.

Two sizes are provided: L and M.

Size: L (M)
L - approx 114cm x 114cm (45“ x 45“) square;
M – approx 110cm x 110cm (43“ x 43“) square;

Needles:
Verison 1, (L) is knitted with: 3.50mm (US 4) 60cm/24“ and 100cm/40“ or longer circular needle for working Brioche St Border (Part 2).
Version 2 (M) is knitted with 3.50mm (US 4) 60cm/24“ and 100cm/40“ circular needle.
Note: My personal knitting tension is tight. If yours isn’t, consider using perhaps 3.00mm / US 2 ½ needles.

L version: 18 stitches and 23 rounds per 10cm x 10cm / 4 x 4 inches in two-color brioche stitch pattern after blocking.
Garter St Gauge: 20 sts X 19 ridge per 10cm x 10cm / 4 x 4 inches after blocking.
