Shortly after I saw the new PRIDE flag in 2019, I produced this design idea for a shawl. It has been in the background for a while and it is time for me to get it out to the world. I am both excited and hesitant to offer something that I feel is both important and very symbolic. In working on this design, my general tendency to add my own spin & ideas onto a base concept needed to be held in check in order to honor the original. I truly hope I have given this important symbol a novel look and that I am offering you something enjoyable to make, mixed with a little history about the Progress & Pride flags. This is a thoughtful & mindful knitting project promoting tolerance and acceptance of all people.

PRIDEFUL:
This shawl is more of a symbol than a design. I was challenged to simplify my thoughts & ideas in order to make sure the overall visual impact of this important symbol was maintained. There are a few light lace and texture elements, but also a lot of GARTER in the ever-important (and longstanding) Rainbow section of this new flag.

YARN:
This Shawl is designed to be worked in fingering, so it will be light and lovely, with a nice drape. It can be worked in other weights of yarn. I have not tested those for needle size or amounts. Your best guess at what you need will be necessary, I do not have these answers. Thank you for your understanding.

SIZE: The piece requires a hard and wet block to open the pace and even out the garter rows in the rainbow.
HEIGHT: 30” / 77 cm the length can vary. After blocking, it will be quite long. The Center portion is 40” wide.
The rainbow flag will be made longer or shorter.
Length is measured at the longest points.
LONGEST LENGTH: 132”/ 336 cm (11 feet / 3.35 meters) - Madelinetosh version using ALL of your Rainbow colors and the maximum number of stitches. (200 sts plus edge)
SHORTER LENGTH: 72”/ 183 cm (6 feet / 1.83 meters) -
Urth Harvest version uses about half of your Rainbow colors and HALF the number of stitches. (100 sts plus edge)

NEEDLES & GAUGE:
US 04’s/ 3.5 mm rounds & dpn’s (I like casting on the center with DPN’s and using them for the I-Cord CO & BO)
This starts small and gets bigger, interchangeable needles with varying length cables are great. If using fixed needles, I would look for the longest cable and use a magic loop.

GAUGE uses US 04’s/ 3.5 mm in Stocking Knit, in the ROUND, before BLOCKING. Having good gauge is important checking, even in process is wise. Knitting too loosely will negatively impact your end results.

If using a yarn kit with 50g balls, you SHOULD check gauge and weights against pattern information after completing the five center colors!
Dropping to a smaller needle for the garter Rainbow will work FINE, not inhibit the look… and may save you from frogging. The pattern is a little gauge flexible. But no one wants to run out of yarn.

NOTIONS:
Markers +/- 20, if desired (at least one is needed at the start).
A yarn sewing needle for tucking in ends.
