The Pup Patch Hat is another sack-hat design!

This version avoids sewing/seaming, and reduces the number of stitches to be picked up. It’s worked both in the round and flat—in almost a 50/50 split; maybe 40/60—and can be made only one 16” circular needle if you like.

(The first few rounds may stress a 16” circular. You’re welcome to use DPNs for those if you like.)

An optional button reduces the cat-ear/sack hat profile, if desired, and the ever-changing direction of work lends itself well to multi-colored gradient yarns and colorful scraps.

Materials:
150-192 yards of worsted-weight yarn; size large sample shown in Lion Brand Ferris Wheel in Evergreen and Dream in Color City Ring the Blossom Bell
1 16”+ circular needle in US7/4.5mm, or size needed for gauge.
4 removable stitch markers.
Tapestry needle.
Waste yarn for provisional cast-on
Crochet hook, size F-G/3.75-4.0mm
1 button—3/4”/2cm or preferred size.

I’d recommend choosing the button before you work the button loop; that way, you can insure a perfect fit between the button and the loop, and choose any button you like!

Gauge:
Gauge is 16 sts and 28 rows measured over 4”/10cm, in blocked garter stitch. Please be sure to check your gauge.

Sizes:
Once you understand the hat’s construction, this is incredibly easy to customize—but the .PDF includes specific instructions for the three sizes listed.
