The purple beaded bag is inspired by Hermione’s beaded bag from the book Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows by JK Rowling. I wanted a bag that was true to book in the sense that it could fit down a sock. The only other description of the bag is that is small, beaded, and purple. I then let my imagination run wild and this was the result! I hope you enjoy crafting this bag. Please let me know if manage the Capacious extremis charm, as I would love to learn it!

This bag is designed to be small as it should be able to fit down a sock. You can make a bigger bag by using a thicker yarn and larger needles. Gauge is not critical, but you want a fairly tight fabric to ensure items stay in the bag and are not visible.

“When you say you’ve got the Cloak, and clothes…” said Harry, frowning at Hermione, who was carrying nothing except her small beaded handbag, in which she was now rummaging.

“Yes, they’re here,” said Hermione, and to Harry and Ron’s utter astonishment, she pulled out a pair of jeans, a sweatshirt, some maroon socks, and finally the silvery Invisibility Cloak.

“How the ruddy …?”

“Undetetable Extension Charm,” said Hermione. “Tricky, but I think I’ve done it okay; anyway, I managed to fit everything we need in here.” She gave the fragile-looking bag a little shake and it echoed like a cargo hold as a number of heavy objects rolled around inside it.

Pattern Information:

Sizing
One-size. Approximately 6” tall and 4” in diameter across the base.

Yarn

  • Approximately 100 yards fingering yarn in main color (purple)
  • Approximately 20 yards fingering yarn in contrast color (gold)
  • Sample used Dream in Color Smooshy with Cashmere (Concord) as the main color and Madelinetosh Tosh Sock (Liquid Gold) as the contrast color

Bag Closure
- Additional yarn or ribbon. Sample used a ribbon from a bed sheet set.

Beads
At least 80 beads that will fit onto your yarn. Sample used size 6/0 gold tone beads.

Needles
US 3 / 3.25 mm or as needed to meet gauge. I knit fairly tight, so you may need to go down a needle size, as desired.

Gauge
6 stitches and 9 rows in 1” square in the round. You will want a tight gauge so there are not gaps in your bag, but meeting my exact gauge is not critical.

Notions
Crochet hook to add beads, stitch markers, and darning needle

It was now packed inside the beaded bag, which, Harry was impressed to learn, Hermione had protected from the Snatchers by the simple expedient of stuffing it down her sock.
